An ancient symbol of abundance, the Green Man of Celtic myth and legend inspired Kathy Shaker to push her color and construction boundaries in this art quilt. The benevolent face of the harvest spirit is surrounded by multi-layered circles of spiked rays as he seems to preside over riotous dancing autumn leaves in the borders. The rays are further accentuated by streaming lines of quilting stitches in autumn hues and continue out to the edges of the quilt. Close examination of the central face reveals the Green Man''s smiling features are executed in machine embroidery and complimented by a wreath of tiny silk ribbon flowers. The color scheme of the quilt is tied to the harvest season when ripe oranges, reds, and golds, offset by dozens of shades of green leaves, are Nature''s costume of choice.
